My Experience as a Market Risk Analyst

Post any questions you may have and I'll do my best to answer!

There doesn't seem to be much information on this website regarding this niche role so I'd like to just expand on this and hopefully future readers can gain insight on this function.

I interned this past summer in Market Risk at a top BB (GS/MS) and I think the role is great if you want to make a decent living with great hours. As an analyst, I covered two equity trading businesses and you primarily analyze the risks that the traders take in using VaR and stress tests. You'll look at PnL changes day over day as well as your exposure to equity delta risk, interest rate risk, credit risk, etc. There was definitely some interaction with front office Strats as well as other groups within Finance including credit risk, controllers, and corporate treasury. The work is interesting in the fact that you are able to learn a lot about the markets and see the risk side of things that the traders don't see. Traders usually look at the traditional trading greeks while we looked at VaR and stress tests.

Some of the other interns that worked with me covered other desks like mortgages, interest rate products, credit products, etc. They learned a lot about their own businesses and during the summer a few full time analysts lateraled into S&T.

It actually isn't too quant intensive as I thought it would be. Most of the work is done in Excel and some prop software like secDB. Strats do more of the quant work.

Some parts were definitely boring though. Lots of internal process work for SOX, Volcker, Basel, CCAR, etc and compiling different kinds of risk packages on legal entities to internal risk committees, SEC, and the FRB.

However, a misconception is that it is a supporting role. It is definitely not a supporting role. Market Risk does not support or report to the front office. The Market Risk team reports directly to the CRO of the company. In fact, the group I interned at had our own support teams in the Technology division.

Compensation - in NY base started at 80k + 10k sign on, I'm guessing bonus would be around 15-25k
Hours - 8-8 usually with no weekends. There will be the occasional 10pm night but it is rare.

It gets a lot better when you move up the ladder though. All the VPs and up I worked with left by 5-6 pm.

Sure, compensation flattens out but work life balance gets a lot better and it's not a stressful job at all.

Post any questions you may have and I'll do my best to answer!

Offered SA from BB, but low GPA

I wanted to throw this out here and see what WSO thought of this situation.

I currently have an offer for a SA with a BB in operations. My concern is that while doing the background check the BB will request a full transcript and they'll see a year of college that was a absolute disaster for me. I took some time off after that year to figure out what the hell I was doing and what I wanted to do, got some decent work experience and generally figured my shit out.

However, my cumulative GPA is total garbage from that year though my major GPA is a 3.4(barely decent). My major GPA what I listed on my resume and application and specified it as such. My GPA was never discussed in any interview with anybody on super day. For some reason they never brought it up at all.

If they request a full transcript with the background check, and see this year that was shit, will they rescind their offer? Blacklist me? Should I email the VPs and MD I interviewed with and make them aware of what the background check will turn up? On one hand they see me as competent and qualified since I passed all the interviews and got the offer, but I can see how they would also think that I'm a complete moron and potentially a liar.

Just curious what everyone thinks on here and any advice as to how to handle the situation. Thanks.

LSE MSc management for IB

Coming from a liberal arts background, I have decided to apply for the LSE MSc management course for a career change. My career goal is to become an associate analyst. I'm just wondering how competitive it is. How strong is LSE's management? Is there anyone who are studying for this degree can share your experience and offer me some advice? Thanks!

P.S. I'm aware of the fact that Cambridge and LBS probably offer a better alternative. However, my lack of internship experience makes the two-year course at LSE more attractive to me.

What do I DO ?? SO MANY OPTIONS ;)

Got a Question for all you with your infinite wisdom,

I'm going to be starting a job on the street next Monday. Really excited for it and am looking forward to learning a lot. The job I am starting has always been something I wanted to do, for the experience and learning opportunity, but has not been my dream job.

However, two days ago, I got a offer from my dream Job....

I told my dream job HR that I was starting this other job next week, and the HR team said, "great - but you need to give us a commitment of whether you accept our offer... oh... and we will let you start anytime from today up-to 9 months out".

Which means, I can do this new job for 9 months and then switch to my dream job....

Is there anything wrong with doing this ? I ask because

1) I can gain the experience with the current job (which is different from my dream job)... and still have my dream job open in 9 months

2) Yes, I am going to be going into the current job, potentially with a clear 9 month exit strategy ( but is that terribly bad? ).... if I didn't like this current job in 9 months, I might have tried to leave anyway...

3) I made a commitment to this current job, so I do not want to just reneg 5 days before I start ....

4) The dream job is OK with me working somewhere else before I start with them...

What do you people think? ethical, unethical ? OK and a part of life ? Do the best for me and get the most experience ?

Any thoughts / insights / advice appreciated.

Is it possible to start the full-time program straight after finishing the summer intership?

Hi guys. I am a final year stduent from one of the top 4 universities in Britain with no prior internship experience in banking.

While going through the recruitment process for the full-time positions, I have found that having no relavent internship experience is a huge disavantage. So I just made additional applications for summer programs at BBs.

Since I am graduating by the time the internships start, I am very curious about whether banks allow their interns to start the full-time position straight after the end of the summer program or i should wait one year with my unemployment benefit.. (of course assuming that I was good enough to get a return offer)

BTW, i am talking about banks in London

What kind of IB internships should I apply as a master student?

I am planning to do a two-year master in a UK target school next year (I did my science undergraduate degree in a target school too). I want to work as an analyst after I have graduated. Currently, I don't have any relevant internship under my belt. I am wondering what kind of internship I should apply for during my master. I have looked at the big banks' websites and most of the summer internships seem to be for undergraduates.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hey,

Interested in Miami finance scene, specifically IB or AM. Anyone with any experience with it? I'm at UNC right now, so not really a regional target for any Miami firms, but I guess I still have that "Top Southern school" tag. Anyone with any ideas on the scene down there and how to break in? Are the BBs only made up of senior guys who xferred from NYC? Thanks

Any ideas?

Too Old To Apply for Analyst Jobs in IB?

$

Hi Everyone,

I'm currently working in accounting, but have been looking to go into Investment Banking now after realizing that my current field isn't for me and that the opportunities I'll get from sticking around here are not interesting to me either. I think Investment Banking is the best fit for me because I have a background in finance, but I've also heard that IB is really rigid in their recruiting structure and won't usually look at people with experience applying for analyst positions. I was a little surprised by this, so I was wondering if anyone can confirm or deny this? In case it matters, I'm mostly targeting reputable middle-market investment banks because I personally enjoy working with smaller companies and because I've heard they offer a slightly better lifestyle adjustment, which I would take over making more money.

Also, in case analyst roles aren't an option, what would be the next best thing for me to do? I know management consulting at MBB would be impossible since I don't fit the profile of who they hire (I'm a non-target and don't have a killer SAT), but is there another role I could look into that could help me break in later on? For example, are there consultants who perform similar tasks as IBD analysts but are more open to non-traditional hires?

I'm in my mid-20s. Basically around the same age as a 2nd or 3rd year analyst.

Thanks!

Goldman Sachs Internship Background Check

Hi guys, I recently got a summer internship offer from GS in the operations division. I have a question about their background check. In my resume, I listed my major GPA under "GPA:...", but not specifies as "Major GPA:...". I assume that they would think the number after GPA on my resume is my cumulative GPA not my major GPA, and then consider that I'm lying in the application? Should I contact the HR and tell them the GPA I listed on my resume is my major GPA not cumulated?

Thanks for sharing your opinions in advance.
