so, I'm a bit confused by the amount of effort that goes into recruiting. I just started my MBA on a part-time basis in the midwest. I have access to some resources through the career center (such as wetfeet, vault guides, The-Deal, financial times, but sadly no CapIQ for part-timers).
I keep hearing on my chats with 2nd years, that when you're networking with alums at target banks, try to read up on their offices, how competitive they are in regards to other banks in that area, what deals they worked on, etc. I wanted to post this question on here as to how do you actually learn about the offices, heavyhitters, deals they've worked on, etc:
Granted many BB deals would be with public companies so reading up material from company filings is a possibility, but what about middle-market deals where many are private companies with no obligrations to report details about their deals.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to look up deals (I know of NY Deal Book, The Deal and otherwise looking at middlemarket.com) but to be honest, in the few I've read on, I couldn't find many details about the deal itself (such as financing terms, debt vs equity, strategic vision) let alone which banker(s) worked on it.
How is one expected to learn this information, without asking the bankers themselves? I am planning to network within my own bank (I'm in mid-office with FO contact given Risk function), but I want to come off as just as prepared as another guy trying to break-in from an MBA program, so thought I'd pose this question for discussion here. Where do you find past deals, strength of offices (as in which Chicago office is the best, which is the best Oil & Gas office in Houston, best TMT group in LA, etc) and who are the rainmakers there?
