Networking with non-alumni for non-BB

Currently attend a target school and was told for BB, I should only network with Alumni b/c my resume will only been seen by people from my school.

My question is, is this true for non-BB firms too? Should I network with analysts from firms like PJT, Moelis, etc that aren't from my school?
