BB IBD Associate role as a reset?

My background -
Solid public university - 3.8+ GPA
2 years - MM IBD - coverage group
2 years - PE Co-Investments

Ranked well and my bank and was happy there, but wasn't learning much by the end. I had personal reasons to be back in my home town and took a less than ideal buy-side gig. Those reasons no longer hold, and I'm itching to live in NY while I'm still somewhat young.

I'd like to avoid the MBA route if I can. 1) Have a business ugrad/CFA already and generally not interested in the coursework. 2) I'm confident in my abilities as an individual but don't think I'm competitive enough for a post-MBA buyside role to risk the $200K+ & opp cost.

I tried to lateral to Pre-MBA PE roles in NY last year, but struggled due to being out of market, and working at semi-known firms.

Do you guys think it makes sense to try to off-cycle recruit for a Associate role at a BB? I think it'd help me break into the NY and help me build a network in the city. It would also help with branding, something I've not paid attention to in the past. Would I get a crack at senior associate growth equity / PE roles down the line?
